Gust: Gust

The second LP is always the hardest one to get right but Gust fans won't likely be disappointed with this one. The band, a hardcore act out of Sweden, shows no sign of mellowing or losing their punk / political edge. The music here is basically contemporary hardcore played without surprises. There are a few progressive-sounding moments but things are pretty well committed to the overall hardcore sound and ethos. The proggier stuff shows up on "Hollow Faces," though it could just be mellower material calling itself progressive. I never know what labels like "progressive" are supposed to mean.

The ten songs on this album offer just less than 30 minutes of pounding and aggressive music with pointed and angry lyrics. I thought the music was great, though I admit that I would have enjoyed connecting with a few more memorable riffs from time to time. Be sure to check out "From Cradle to Grave," a strong track with a slow opening. This is a solid hardcore release.
