Gaudious, Dominic: The Dominic Didgeridoo Express
Dominic Gaudious is a multi-instrumentalist specializing in guitar as well as ethnic instruments like the sitar and didgeridoo. For those of you unfamiliar with the didgeridoo, it is a wind instrument originating in ancient Australia and sort of has a low hum droning tone. Gaudious proves to be an excellent player on his latest release The Dominic Didgeridoo Express. Besides Gaudious there is a wide array of guest musicians including Gregg Bissonette (drums), Dave Weiner (guitar), Stu Hamm (bass), Michelle Amato (vocals), Tony Franklin (bass) and David Hudson (didgeridoo).
Gaudious has all his bases covered as the album explores fusion, funk, ethnic, trance, psychedelic and rock music. His guitar playing is all over the disc including some fiery solos in the fusion inspired "Wild Man" and "Space & Time". In "I Wanna Play the Didgeridoo" his guitar work has a more bluesy rockabilly feel while the grooving "Big Bowl of Jello" is all funky bass lines and biting lead guitar. Other highlights include the hazy psychedelic textures of "Hippie Dance Music" and the hypnotic "Adrenal Fatigue", where Gaudious takes the band into the world of trance music. If you are unsure about the didgeridoo aspect, don't worry as its use is always tasteful with calming tones and interesting timbres, complementing the tracks in a highly positive fashion.
The Dominic Didgeridoo Express has come as a nice surprise as I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this disc. A good place to start is the artist's webpage to hear some samples for yourself. Recommended.
