Westray, Ron: Jimi Jazz
Jazz trombonist Ron Westray holds an impressive resume. Since the early '90s Westray has been involved with The Marcus Roberts Ensemble, The Mingus Big Band, The Lincoln Center Jazz Band and The Wynton Marsalis Septet. His new album Jimi Jazz pays homage to the legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix.
Joining Westray are Richard Whiteman (Fender Rhodes), Dave Restivo (Fender Rhodes), Matt Rait (electric guitar), Ross MacIntyre (electric bass) and Anthony Michelli (drums).
Classic Hendrix is covered as well as some tracks you might not be familiar with. The album opens with the one two punch of "Purple Haze" and "Hey Joe" with the former taking on a bopping, toe tapping flair with the lead trombone replacing Hendrix's vocals and the latter having a more languid approach. Other highlights include the scintillating trombone solo in "I Don't Live Today" and a sultry version of "Little Wing". Westray's rich tones are ever present throughout.
If you are a fan of Hendrix you might be curious to hear these songs in a new light. If you a fan of the trombone you may be equally as intrigued. There is no doubting Westray's love of Hendrix's music as he plays with panache and skill, giving these ten Hendrix tunes the care and attention they deserve. Released on Blue Canoe Records.
