Autumn's Dawn: Gone

This is a debut album from an Australian duo. One of the members, Sorrow, may be well-known to some readers for his work behind Germ as well as Austere, Woods of Desolation, and Nazxul. Autumn's Dawn is a relatively new project, one that blends sorrowful sounds with a slightly black metal sound. The band's promotional materials describe it as something connecting "depressive rock" and "post-black metal." I always get a little jittery with all the new genre labels out there, but the post-black metal tag works well enough.

The music on this album, as mentioned above, is built around sadness and sorrow. The tracks work best when they develop a melancholic guitar pattern and let it build into dark and despairing sounds. The title track was particularly good in this respect. I also thought the track "Dawn" was pretty good. Unfortunately, much of the album drags things out too much, making it hard to connect with the music on the whole. The music isn't exactly boring, but it does miss out on the opportunity to do more with the possibilities of what a post-black metal music could sound like.
