Here's an intriguing one from Denmark, the debut from the oddly named Innsmouth, a band who are obviously obsessed with the works of H.P. Lovecraft. The Shadow Over Innsmouth features lyrics drenched in the sci-fi/horror world of Lovecraft, and the band surround those lyrical themes with brutal, often times technical death metal arrangements. The band is comprised of Thor Sejersen 'Krieg' Riis (Guitar. Drum & Keyboard Programming), Kim 'Dvergur' Brandhøj ( vocals), and Martin 'Der Mönch' Munch Christensen ( Bass), and the trio have done a good job here of setting the creepy vibe and then hammering home their bludgeoning attack. Thor for his part is a very capable guitarist, dropping in some eye popping shred on "Vomiting a Hole in the Soul" and "Dreams of Slowly Drowning", while "Ritual of Chüd" has some crazy technical passages that any fan of Obscura, Spawn of Possession, or Necrophagist will go apeshit over. "Re-animator" is also pretty damn relentless, as manic blast beats, rumbling bass, and raging guitar riffs collide with Kim's demonic growling. It's all quite solid, and though a few of the songs have a somewhat 'samey' feel to them, this is a promising debut from a band that any tech-death fan will want to keep their eye on.
