Excel: Split Image

This is a reissue of a classic hardcore album originally released in 1987. Excel hailed from Venice, California and was definitely one of the driving forces not only behind California hardcore but also crossover punk and thrash. The early albums have been re-released before but are not readily available. With this remastered release, fans are able to get their hands on this classic release and enjoy two demos from the mid 1980s that are actually pretty strong. CD and vinyl versions of this release also include a booklet with rare photos. Overall, it's a good package, particularly for those of us who love 80s hardcore and want to fill in the gaps in their collections.

As far as reviewing the album, I'm not sure what to add. Some of the songs are better than others but Excel is a terrific band and this is a strong release, a classic from a classic era. To my ears, it still sounds fresh and interesting. I especially liked "Insecurity" and "Split Image." Be sure to check out the synthesizers on the demo version of the latter.
