Kolony: Sledge

Ralph Waldo Emerson once complained that nearly everyone in his generation had some scheme for reforming the world. I think something similar could be said about many people today. Everyone knows exactly what the solutions are to the world's problems, especially when they are arguing about politics. It turns out that things are more complicated than some people believe, but it's comforting (I guess) to give it the old college try.

I start this way because Kolony's album Sledge is about starting things over and creating a new society, one not indebted to modernity and one consistent with humans nature (whatever that actually means). The lyrics on this album, from start to finish, reflect on precisely these kinds of questions, including related ones such as problems with the justice system, greed, the loss of real heroes, and so on. Don't get me wrong, I'm interested in stuff like this, at least to some extent. Still, I was more drawn to the message of "Anthem," a song that reflects on the death of someone's father. Having lost my own father a little while ago, I thought it was cool to hear a song that resonated with some of my own thoughts about a loved one's death.

The music behind all these heavy ideas is pretty good. I didn't think it was very memorable, but I liked it well enough. The sound is pretty much traditional metal, with a heavy dose of Iron-Maiden guitar work and Metallica-inspired vocals. I'm sure there are other bands lurking in the background as well, but you get the idea.

Bottom line: the music here is familiar, melodic, and well-played. It isn't essential listening but it isn't terrible either.
