From France comes Supertanker, and their debut album Songs From the Ashes for Klonosphere Records. Billed as stoner/thrash/90s metal for fans of Down, Pantera, and Crowbar, I'd even throw a bit of Alice in Chains in there as well, especially in some of the vocal passages. With 13 songs, there's a lot to take in here on Songs From the Ashes, but thankfully it's mostly fun, kick ass tunes filled with no shortage of riff-o-rama. Pulverizing tracks like "Below Ground", "Temple of Sin", "Meticulous Crime Against Ourselves", and "Inside" lumber along with menacing intent, driven by some crushing, booze soaked riffs and an assortment of vocal styles, including shouts, bellows, screams, and growls. The band can also pick up the pace and deliver some speedy thrash, evident on "Black Age" and "In Fall We Trust". "Far" is a must hear for any fan of Pantera or Lamb of God, as is the manic "Antihero", while the steamrolling "We're Dying By Our Hands" and "I Can't Live A Second Life" instantly brings to mind both Down & Crowbar.
Not the most original album ever made, Songs From the Ashes still packs a potent punch and will be something that any fan of bruising stoner metal will want to check out.
