Wizard Rifle: Here in the Deadlights
From the moment I saw the cover art for this one I was hooked. The image, a skull sitting on a mirror reflecting a cloudy sky, is both enigmatic and strange. Looking at it now, I realize that I find the skull itself to be one of the most interesting features on display. It sits looking downward, its reflected eye sockets almost capturing the viewer's gaze. Maybe it's a memento mori, a reminder that all mortals die.
The music here is not so much a reflection on death as it is trippy and wild, strange and fascinating. Listening to it makes me want to run around and flail my arms. I mean it. This is visceral stuff, music for the body. The band's style is a blend of noise and punk and something like psychedelic music. That last label doesn't always quite work, but the band nevertheless has an eye on the 70s despite their irreverent insistence on mixing things up in crazy and dangerous ways.
As I listened to this album, I found myself transfixed by what I heard. I was a little surprised by that. I love crazy music but this was extreme craziness, music from another time and another place. Still, it holds together for just over thirty minutes of music. This album won't be to everyone's liking, but it makes for a rewarding listen. I really enjoyed "Crystal Witch" and "Paul the Sky Tyrant." Fans of explosive and strange punk should resonate with this one. This is one of my favorite releases of 2014.
