Anatomy of Habit: Ciphers + Axioms
This album begins with several minutes of words and music performed in a very deliberate, almost robotic, manner. The beat is simple and the effect trance-like, almost as if the music were setting up a means of intense meditation. As things develop, the music increasingly takes on the feel of performance art. That is, the music here is not simply the creative result of a band making music together, but an attempt to reveal the highly performative nature of creation itself. I like such experimentation as a rule, but I confess that I found it all a bit off-putting, especially at first. From time to time, I was even reminded of that episode of Friends in which Ross performed his own bizarre creations on a rather small keyboard. Obviously, the music here is not the stuff of sitcoms, but music like this is not without a certain amount of humor, intentional or not. As I listened to the album more and more deeply, though, I discovered the layers, the components that can make music like this fascinating and rich. I think fans of post-metal and noise music will admire much of what the guys in Anatomy of Habit are doing. There are also some effective uses of drone / ambient elements.
