Since forming in 2009, Swedish act Three Seasons have slowly started building a strong discography of highly enjoyable '70s styled hard rock albums. Their latest Transubstans Records release, Grow, once again sees them embracing their influences (Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Grand Funk Railroad, Uriah Heep, Humble Pie, Cactus)and churning out a batch of songs that hint at the good old days but are also modern sounding enough to draw in younger listeners. Sartez Faraj (Guitars, Vocals, Hammond organ), Olle Risberg (Bass), and Christian Eriksson (Drums) are a trio to be reckoned with, and the collection of eight rockers here show that the band continues to 'grow' and it's about time the world started to take notice.
Upbeat, vintage styled songs like "Which Way" and "Drowning" contain plenty of hard rock punch with a hint of blues, and "By the Book" throws in some melodic progressive rock into the fray, complete with simmering Hammond organ, sumptuous vocals, and layers of intricate guitar riffs. In fact, the band pushes the prog element even further on the lengthy instrumental "Tablas of Bahar", throwing in some tasty acoustic guitar passages in between fuzz-toned riffs, sultry Hammond, and blistering blues-soaked lead guitar solos. The lumbering "Food For the Day" hits hard, like a midnight jam between Purple, Sabbath, and Cactus, while the emotional "No Shame" throws some blues & psychedelia into a blender, and out comes this cool Jimi Hendrix/Humble Pie sounding hybrid. Chilling stuff, and a GREAT vocal from Faraj to go along with his impressive guitar & organ solos. "Home is Waiting" is a kicked up heavy blues rock romp, and the near 10-minute closer "Familiar Song" once again sees the Hammond organ come to the forefront for a mix of blues, heavy rock, and prog, with Faraj's vocals soaring and his guitar riffs lethal.
Three Seasons' previous release Understanding the World was a damn impressive affair, and Grows matches it every step of the way. This is band that knows how to rock hard, how to groove, and most importantly how to write memorable songs that bridge the gap between the '70s and today. Great vocals, great guitar work, solid rhythms, and killer Hammond organ...it's an all-out winner in my book!
