Every year, in late December as I've already put together my Best of the Year list, I wind up hearing a release that came out earlier in the year that I've gotten to late, and it just blows me away. Such is the case here in 2014 with the latest from Finnish melodic death metal veterans Insomnium, titled Shadows of the Dying Sun. Shame on me for actually waiting so long to check this one out, as this band has long delivered stunning material time in and time out over the years.
Plenty of instantly memorable material on Shadows of the Dying Sun, including the unforgettable "While We Sleep", the highly melodic "Black Heart Rebellion", the richly textured title track, or the proggy overtones of "The Promethean Song". The band as always mixes in an effective variety of death growls and clean melodic singing, with the guitar riffs driving the songs to lofty heights every step of the way. This is not overly savage or brutal music (though it does have its moments), instead the most melodic & poignant that death metal can actually get. This has always been one of the most unique characteristics about Insomnium...their music is just so damn beautiful that you almost forget that at their core, they are indeed a death metal band.
Lovely stuff here on Shadows of the Dying Sun, and well worth your attention.
