Here we have the final release from Chicago's black metal heathens Twilight, as they have announced they are calling it a day and III-Beneath Trident's Tomb will be the final nail in the coffin for them. Can't say their style of sludge laden, melancholy US black metal has really done a lot for me, and this swan song is no exception. To these ears, there just seems to be something missing from the music of Twilight, and too much of a reliance on noise & chaos. "Oh Wretched Son" for example, has plenty of promise, but the injection of punk/hardcore styled bellows amid the relentless blast beats, tremolo picked riffs, and raspy screams just comes across as major league cacophony. "Lungs" is pure sludge (black metal it ain't), and "Swarming Funereal Mass" just plods along aimlessly with funeral doom riffing and relentless growling. Not much changes for "A Flood of Eyes", and while "Below Lights" attempts to mix things up a tad, it's still way too monotonous & plodding to succeed.
In the end I wanted to get a little more excited about this going away party for Twilight, but to these ears there's not much enticing material to be found on III-Beneath Trident's Tomb. Thanks for being on our show...
