Svarta Stugan is a three piece band from Sweden. They formed in 2012 and released their self-titled debut that same year followed by A Mutation And A Madness in 2013. Their third release Aspects Of Our Future Selves is their latest EP.
The band refers to their music as "experimental rock and twee noise". I'm not sure about the 'twee' tag but experimental rock certainly applies. I would also add post rock, drone music and noise rock (is their such a thing?) to that as well.
The album's first track "Neo-Futuristic" is drenched in synths and keyboards before the guitar and drums pick up the pace before ending on a calmer note. The synth inundated soundscape continues on the cinematic "Street View" whereas "Damn Good Coffee" is heavier with a more intense drum sound and post rocking guitar chords. "Drums In The Light Of Christ" and "Unbirth" have a much more improvised free form jazz rock sound with discordant saxophone courtesy of guest musician Christopher Thorén. While these two tracks are not my favourite on the album they do demonstrate the trio's penchant for experimental musings. The last tune "We Are" is much more calming with pretty guitar and a slow post rock build. A nice reprieve considering the chaotic nature of the previous two tracks.
Svarta Stugan are certainly talented and definitely doing something a little different. If experimental/post rock is to your liking you might want to give this one a spin. For me, a solid three stars.
