Intentional Trainwreck: The Accident
Intentional Trainwreck hail from Baltimore, Maryland. Their new album, which I believe to be their first is titled The Accident. In the band are Patrick Gaffney (drums), Mike Galway (bass) and Pete Lesko (vocals, guitars, synths). Guest musician Ian Efrom adds bass on a few tracks. Gaffney formerly played with Cerebrus Effect and Chaos Code and continues to work with Deluge Grander. Galway has also been a part of many bands including Dali's Watch, Uncle Gut and Cerebrus Effect. Lesko has been involved with Weapons of Mass Destruction, Tolerance for Tragedy and Turbomatic. Of those bands the only one I am familiar with is Deluge Grander which I quite like.
The Accident is certainly much heavier than Deluge Grander but like that band there is a dissonant quirky quality at work here. The music mixes metal, punk and progressive rock and is quite raw and fairly intense overall. Angular riffs and a general chaotic approach with indie and punk influences make up the album's first track "One for the Lesbians". Lots of change ups as well but I found some of the transitions to be a little disjointed but given the nature of the music that was probably intentional on behalf of the band. "Lunchbox" continues the band's forays into punk and metal as does the energetic "Superconductor". The off kilter riffage continues throughout the album and certainly adds to the progressive nature of the music. My one complaint are the lead vocals of Lesko. While they aren't terrible by any means I did find them a little rough in spots. I will say the growling, when used, is well done.
That said, this is an adventurous album that ventures outside the norms of conventional metal. And for that it is worth a listen.
