Annihilation: The Undivided

This album opens with some rather brooding sounds, including those of a helicopter's rotor system. I'm not sure why, but such effects have a certain powerful pull, as though the mechanical whirring of the helicopter's blades creates a sense of anticipation and also of fear. The sounds remind me of Pink Floyd's own fascination with helicopter sounds. Remember?

The lyrics here are hard to follow without a lyric sheet, but they are drawn from the writings of David Icke, a former athlete and current writer who promotes weird ideas about certain human beings having connections with reptilian humanoids. I've never read his stuff, but it sounds perfect for a handful of extreme death metal songs.

As for the music, it's heavy, extreme, and dark. Even though this is an EP, it certainly helps Annihilation make a case for themselves as one of the hardest-hitting bands working in the genre. I'm especially curious to know what themes the band will take up on their next full-length. If we're lucky, it will take up more of the strange and eclectic ideas out there in the world today.
