Exist Immortal: Darkness Of An Age

From London, UK, Meyrick de la Fuente –Vocals, Tom Montgomery - guitar/vocals, Kurt Valencia – Guitar, David Billote – bass and Charlie Bines – drums are Exist Immortal and they obviously dig Meshuggah in a big way but definitely aren't clones of said band. This is a repackaged version of their debut album which made people sit up and notice in Europe hence the US reissue. The original album kicks many forms of ass mainly propelled by the vocals of Meyrick de la Fuente who must gargle the proverbial razor blades before a recording session!

I have to say that I much prefer it when he goes into full on scream/ death metal mode as at times when he sings everything threatens to move into a more emo-type territory which is generally never a good thing but may well help gain younger fans. It's the full on metal that interests me though and on tracks such as "Legions" they blend gargantuan riffs with memorable tunes. Occasionally from around the mid-point things sometimes get a bit samey but that is by no means rare these days. Everything is redeemed by the sheer power of "The Omen Machine" which concludes proceedings in an impressive six minute epic style which displays huge potential for the future.

The bonus tracks are pretty solid as well especially "Delirium" which very much encapsulates what Exist Immortal are all about: brutally heavy in places but with an eye on the commercial ball. Even better is "The Void" with its hypnotic motif running through the middle of its chugging rhythm. This is one of the more impressive metalcore releases I've heard in a while.
