Sorrows, The: Gonna Find a Cave

Rise Above Records have done a great job in recent years not only unearthing some fantastic underground recordings from heavy bands of the '60s & '70s, but also signing some new acts to their label that carry on in those grand traditions. One listen to the vinyl 7" of Gonna Find a Cave and you would swear this thing was recorded back in 1968. Well, history shows that The Sorrows were actually formed in Coventry back in the early '60s, with a top 20 hit "Take a Heart" to their credit in 1965 as well as plenty of other popular psychedelic pop songs throughout the ensuing years. Vocalist Don Fardon left the band in 1970 for a solo career, but he's back in the band now and these are the first recordings of their reunion. Once again, I have to mention that these songs sound like they just came out of a time machine, dripping with early psychedelia, pop, and hard rock, like a bastard love child of The Animals & Iron Butterfly. The title track is a fun little psych rocker, while "'Don't Do That" bridges early rock & roll, R&B, and rockabilly in raucous style. "Doin' Alright Tonight" has hooks aplenty to go along with some meaty guitar riffs, a song that in a perfect world could have some hit potential.

My interest has certainly been peaked, so hopefully there's more to come from these British veterans.
