Eclipse: Armageddonize

Have you ever heard the phrase "that song is infectious" ? Well, what we have here is an album of songs that fall into that category, the latest from Swedish act Eclipse. I mean, their 2012 release Bleed & Scream was a rock solid set of slick melodic hard rock that I still play to this day, and they've once again knocked it out of the park here with Armageddonize. From top to bottom, this one is filled with tunes that display monstrous hooks, soaring vocals, addicting rhythms, and killer guitar work. Comprised of Erik Mårtensson (lead vocals, guitar), Magnus Henriksson (lead guitars), Robban Bäck (drums), and Magnus Ulfstedt ( bass), Eclipse are a young band with boatloads of talent, and it's time for the world to take notice.

It's not hard to listen to Armageddonize and wonder just how huge this band might have been in the mid '80s when this style of muscular, hook laden hard rock was all the rage. Mårtensson is a phenomenal lead singer, his powerful vocals just commanding everything in sight on the power ballad "Live Like I'm Dying" and punching through the stratosphere right alongside Henricksson's blistering licks on "Blood Enemies" or "Stand On Your Feet". The guitarist lets his bluesy side come out on the Whitesnake-meets-Bon Jovi styled rocker "Breakdown", but it's his full throttle John Sykes styled metallic riffs & solos that really shine on heavy rockers such as "Love Bites", "All Died Young", and the vibrant, ultra-catchy "I Don't Wanna Say I'm Sorry". For all you fans of Journey, Foreigner, and Night Ranger, check out the memorable anthem "The Storm", another tune chock full of soaring hooks and absolutely scorching guitar work.

Sparkling production, unforgettable vocals, masterful guitar work...I mean, if you love melodic hard rock, it doesn't get much better than this folks. Another winner from the Frontiers Records family.

Eclipse: Armageddonize

First things first, Armageddonize is a shockingly bad name for an album. What does it mean? It doesn't give any indication as to what may be within its grooves – it's just a terrible title. The cover art is a tad rubbish as well but fortunately the music itself isn't. I've seen a lot of chat online about the merits of Armageddonize some of which suggest that it is utterly perfect and a quantum step-up from 2012's Bleed & Scream. This isn't a view I fully concur with and I remain steadfast in the belief that Eclipse's greatest moment thus far is "Battlegrounds" from said album. I'd also suggest that Armageddonize isn't the best album to be released by Frontiers Records in February 2015 (that honour would go to Issa's Crossfire) but Armageddonize is another excellent platter.

There are some magnificent muscular melodic rock songs such as the stupendous opener "I Don't Wanna Say I'm Sorry" which for me nestles just behind "Battlegrounds" in their canon. Overall Armageddonize is less in thrall to Whitesnake than its predecessor and as Pete Pardo suggests above practically every song is, "full of soaring hooks and absolutely scorching guitar work." I'd particularly to also nominate "Wide Open" as being special courtesy of another of Erik Mårtensson's trademark fabulous choruses.
