Lost Ubikyst In Apeiron: Abstruse Imbeciles Nailed On Slavery
The French outfit Lost Ubikyst In Apeiron has released their first album Abstruse Imbeciles Nailed On Slavery. It is an impressive piece made all the more so considering this is the work of one musician who calls himself Schrissse.
Besides mixing and mastering Schrissse adds guitars, bass, vocals, drum programming, synths, samples and noises. It really is an impressive piece of music and if I had to make a comparison a heavier and more complex Devin Townsend might be a good place to start. This is a very dense recording with layers of instrumentation so is quite heavy at times, hence the technical metal tag. That said, many pieces have softer ambient-like synths that really help to break up the denseness of the sound. The musicianship is excellent throughout, especially the guitar and synth work. Often the songs meander through many tempo changes before the last note is struck, ensuring boredom a near impossibility. His vocals are also varied, mixing in extreme vox with his very melodic and clean voice. Again, this serves to vary the sound.
The album begins with the quirky progressive metal of "Nothing To S(l)ave". Cool riff progressions, dynamic tempo changes, soaring guitar and an overall heavy collage of sound mixed with mellower motifs makes for one wild ride. "The Way" starts out with darkly hued synths and effects before industrial sounds and massive guitar riffs twist and churn with razor like precision. "Deaf To Reason" has a moody, spacey vibe with a slight nod to Pink Floyd while "Final Roar" channels Devin Townsend with atmospheric synths, thrashy guitar riffs and dense walls of sound before ending on an ambient note. "Blind Cyclops" begins with sound effects and a gentler sound before the music takes on heavier tones with bone crushing riffs, shredding guitar and extreme vocals. "Swallow The Earth" is the album's longest song and is an excellent slice of progressive metal. The dynamics are riveting as the music ventures between shades of heavy and light including numerous tempo changes and excellent lead vocals.
"Peace" is a short piano led piece that leads directly into "Gaļane", the final track. Psychotic sounding riffage, shredding solos and a backdrop of moody synths makes for a dynamic album closer.
Schrissse has left nothing on the table with Abstruse Imbeciles Nailed On Slavery and it is not surprising it took over six years to complete. A must purchase for fans of progressive metal.
