Here we have a reissue of a cool little rarity from the World In Sound folks, the 1968 one-sided album from Northwest psychedelic rock act Easy Chair. Just three songs and totaling about 20-minutes long, this one's brief but pretty enjoyable. The band were comprised of Phil Kirby (guitar, vocals), Jeff Simmons (bass, lead vocals, piano), Peter Larsen (guitar, lead vocals), and Albert Malosky (drums), and history shows that they only existed for about a year, opening for acts such as Cream, The Yardbirds, and Frank Zappa's Mother's of Invention. The band so intrigued Zappa that he signed them to his label Bizarre Records, but before long they had broken up and were no more, with Simmons even joining the Mothers for a few years. Much of the material here is haunting psychedelic bluesy rock, opener "Slender Woman" offering up dreamy arrangements permeated by lush guitar chords, majestic piano, and chilling vocals. "My Own Life" is more of a rocker, complete with heavier guitar riffs soaked in fuzz & wah-wah, the influence of Cream, The Beatles, and Iron Butterfly pretty apparent, while the moody, atmospheric "Easy Chair" drifts into hazy psychedelia and proto-prog realms, with layers of mysterious vocals, melancholy piano, and some biting lead guitar work.
This reissue comes complete with a packed booklet filled with photos and info on the bands history, so you'll have everything you need to know about Easy Chair. Too bad there's not more surviving material from this group, but these three songs have been nicely remastered and sound great. 20 minutes well spent!
