Sticky Fingers Ltd; The: The Sticky Fingers Ltd

The initial blast of guitars on the debut effort from Modena, Italy outfit The Sticky Fingers Ltd screams one thing – Shout At The Devil era Motley Crue. A staccato burst of filthy riffage steadily dissipating into something a little, but not a lot, more refined. And so this album goes, a 70s vibe imbibed with an 80s whiff of bourbon and Sleaze, resulting in some slightly confused, but fun expulsions of explosive expletives.

The band itself has a heritage winding back to 1996, although a reboot in recent years finds this self titled effort as the band's first and a neat little game of spot the influences it is too. "Sweet Delights" offers up some sweet Cheap Trick, "Rain Keeps Fallin'" a mid paced wander through more Robin Zander-isms, but with a Rolling Stones (well, where d'ya think the band got their name from?) swagger. While "In The Night" adds a ramshackle burst of boozy-Bluesy, even if the guitar solo does sound like it's in the wrong key...

With "Take Me Home" Ace Frehley suddenly bursts in the door, the riff revealing the long lost son of "God Of Thunder" by Kiss, with a Zeppelin breakdown of sweet guitars and booming drums offering a well executed change of focus. Although it would be fair to suggest that Bob Ezrin didn't have a hand on the production desk. "Serial Killer" keeps the vibe, solo Frehley licks aided by some Bonhamesque snare smacks (drummer Flash is, er.... flash by name and flash by nature) and a few Page-like outbursts. Unfortunately this more stop start style also reveals the limitations in Lorenz's voice, the singer more Alice Cooper than Paul Stanley or Robert Plant, while the slow intro to "Standing On The Ruins Of Your Life" and throwaway acoustic closer "It Ain't Over" only compound the vocal issues. Although to be fair to the band's mainstay, he handles the more raucous rockers far more convincingly.

So you get the idea. Take some tried and trusted licks, tricks and shaking hips and call it The Sticky Fingers Ltd. However it would be wrong to suggest that this bunch of Italians don't do it well. They do and well enough find a home in the hearts of any 80s Rock child who knows where their music's origins lay. And by that I mean The Stones, Zeppelin Cheap Trick and Kiss, not Modena....!
