Eero Koivistoinen Quartet: Hati Hati

Eero Koivistoinen has been around a while. Quite a while indeed. He received the very first Georgie Award (1967) from the newly founded Finnish Jazz Federation. As a conductor, he is appreciated also outside Finland; he has conducted in countries such as Germany, Norway, Denmark, Hungary, Estonia, Lithuania, Iceland and South Africa. His list of collaborators includes names such as Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, Tom Harrell, Randy Brecker, Gil Evans, John Scofield, Ron McClure and Jack DeJohnette. Eero Koivistoinen Quartet features Alexi Tuomarila, a classically trained pianist, Jori Huhtala who graduated in 2013 as a bass player from the Jazz Department of Sibelius Academy and is rounded out by Finnish drummer Jussi Lehtonen and Hati Hati was originally recorded at Yleisradio's studio facilities in 2009 and its eventual release definitely improves the world a little bit.

Koivistoinen's saxophone dominates (if that's the best word for such a sympathetic player)proceedings nowhere better than on "Times They Are a-Changing" which is spacious and chilly yet warm as well thanks to the lithe piano of Alexi Tuomarila. The fact that this track runs into the equally splendid yet more hyperactive "Moz" makes the middle of this album special, however, the whole album is a mature exploration of modern jazz which would be a welcome adornment to any music collection.
