Dismember: Live Blasphemies (DVD)

OK, you've got one of the original bad boys of Swedish death metal here captured live in Dear Old Stockholm back in 2003. OK, it's a two-disc set, the second includes a documentary (Deathumentary?), featuring rare footage of the band's early days––when it was, in a word, pretty bloody awful––as well as new interview footage, bursting with reflections of umpteen years in the bidness.

If you're a fan, that's great. If you're not? Well, you at least have to give the band props for sticking in there longer than innumerable other death acts that have, well, died off. Watching the archival footage first provides an interesting contrast to the Dismember beast as it stands today, a marching, moshing, death-riffing machine that churns out favorites such as "Soon To Be Dead" and "Skinfather" as though it's playing those tunes for the first time. (Well, much better than if it were playing those tunes for the first time.)

Musically it's almost all good. Bassist Rickard Cabeza proves that he's a madman on his instrument, while the guitar duo of David Blomqvist and Martin Persson rips ear from head as droomer [sic] Fred Estby displays that he's a master of the kit. The only negative (for me at least) is Matti Karki's vocals, which are just a little too rough and gruff for this body. That said, fans will will no doubt embrace the whole package and hold it dear.

A photo gallery and discography are included in the first disc. All in all, there's a few hours of stuff here that should keep you plenty busy after midnight on a Friday night.
