Morbid Evils: In Hate with the Burning World

Svart Records is hot, hot, hot! I haven't heard all the latest releases, of course, but what I have heard so far is really strong. I've already commented on the debut from Heavydeath (see my review elsewhere on this page), so I won't go on about it again, save only to say that it is as awesome as can be.

Morbid Evils, a relatively new band, has also produced an album well worth experiencing. The music here is doomy and slow, down-tuned and dark. Like label mates Heavydeath, the guys in Morbid Evils try for a stripped-down approach to recording, playing as much of the material live in the studio as possible. The result is a dark and despairing set of songs. As Keijo Niinimaa, the band's founder, relates: "We have a desolate worldview, and our aim is to create soundscapes that suck the listeners into fiery sewers in which there is no hope for the future." My only problem with the sewer image is that Stephen King's Pennywise the Dancing Clown often finds It's victims there and I don't want to meet that clown. The music here, however, would make a perfect soundtrack to that evil clown's actions. Seriously.

Bottom line: This is strong stuff. If you like heavy music, tuned low and played with all the necessary menace, then this is for you. Check out "Cruel" and "South of Hell."
