Hawkdope is the brand new album from Italian psychedelic fuzz rock trio Black Rainbows, a nine track excursion into hazy, deep dark space. To say these guys have probably been influenced by Black Sabbath, Monster Magnet, Fu Manchu, Hawkwind, MC5, and Blue Cheer is a massive understatement, as Hawkdope is just dripping with bong infused bluesy psych-metal goodness. It's just Gabriele Fiori (guitars, vocals), Alberto Croce (drums), and Dario Iocca (bass) cranking out this intense wall of fuzz and tripped out sounds, as tunes like "The Prophet", "Wolf Eyes", and "Jesus Judge" hit hard with pulverizing Gibson SG riffs and hypnotic grooves. The title track is the most fun though, a nightmarish journey into psychedelic space rock sounds that recalls vintage Hawkwind, with wah-wah guitars, loads of trippy effects, and haunting vocals. "No Fuel No Fun" and "Hypnotize My Soul with Rock n Roll" both offer up so much groovy fuzz you'll think you were listening to some long lost Blue Cheer, Grand Funk Railroad or MC5 recordings, and "Killer Killer Fuzz", well, I think you can predict what that's all about. "The Cosmic Picker" again recalls the more psychedelic, drug induced space rock of Hawkwind, with a little Pink Floyd thrown in for good measure, and features some sizzling guitar soloing from Fiori.
Overall, Hawkdope is a lot of fan and surprisingly contains plenty of variety. Space rock, bluesy proto-metal, and psychedelia...it's all here, so fire up that lava lamp, spark up your favorite recreational device, and enjoy!
