Clawfinger: Life Will Kill You
Clawfinger is a rock/metal band from Swedish. They formed in 1988 and released a total of seven albums, their last being 2007's Life Will Kill You. This is the first I had heard of the band until this re-release by Metal Mind Productions arrived in my mailbox.
In the band are Zak Tell (vocals), Bärd Torstensen (guitar), André Skaug (bass), Jocke Skog (keyboards, backing vocals) and Henka Johannsson (drums).
The band's rap metal style has certainly been done in the '90s so they didn't break any new ground with this release but the songs are catchy and the riffs heavy, sometimes with an industrial edge. The rap vocals are not my favourite although his clean singing is very good. Many of the heavier tracks contain subtle electronics and are often heavily orchestrated. Guest cellist Emma Haake adds much in this regard.
The lyrics are often hard hitting, sometimes jarringly so. The sullen "Little Baby" is a case in point. The topic of sexual abuse is as dark as it gets and the band needs to be commended for tackling some serious issues. Musically, the sound is mellower with a moody build of keys, cello and electronics and the clean vocals are more enjoyable. Guest vocalist Barbie Swan adds a bit of melancholy to the chorus. The song ends on a heavy note as heavy razor sharp riffs take over. This is my favourite tune by far.
If you enjoy industrial style rap metal with catchy choruses and decent guitar riffs perhaps Life Will Kill You will be worth exploring. While it's a pretty good album for this genre of music I can't see myself playing this one very much as it is just okay for me.
