Midnight Ghost Train, The: Cold Was the Ground
One of the promotional pictures of this band shows the trio goofing around with a bottle of mustard and a table full of huge sandwiches. It reminds me of a similar scene from Dumb and Dumber when our two heroes were basically doing the same thing. These guys obviously don't take themselves seriously. Nothing wrong with that; its fun to be weird, maybe even more fun to be messy.
As for the record, it's one of my new favorites. I love sludge / stoner metal and this is definitely an album worthy of wide attention. I've been listening to it off and on all day and I find it just as fresh and interesting as I did during my first listen. The riffs are beefy and wild and the tone is nothing less than the true warmth and wonder of sludge-soaked distortion. There's also plenty of swagger, the kind that comes from real rock and roll grooves. Like Red Fang? This band is a slightly darker version of the Fang, but with lower vocals and plenty of Southern darkness. Fans of Weedeater will also find plenty to enjoy. I also have to toss in a nod to Clutch—these guys have a similar vibe, but it's got longer hair, longer beards, and sweatier foreheads.
Stoners, rejoice! This is a superb recording. Pick it up, find the groove, bang your head, and raise your fists high.
