Imagine if you will a midnight jam session between Iron Maiden, Megadeth, and Lamb of God...well, that will be the first impression you get when you spin the new EP from Texas metal act Dead Earth Politics, titled Men Become Gods. This new EP is the second in a planned trilogy that began with 2014s The Queen of Steel. There's a reason this Austin band are getting some serious attention these days, and you can hear it from the opening riffs of "Casting Stones", a real barnburner of thrash, classic NWOBHM, and metalcore. Lead singer Ven spews out a wide assortment of growls, screams, bellows, and clean vocals, and he's supported by the talented axe-men Tim & Aaron, with bassist Will and drummer Mason delivering the piledriving rhythms. Plenty of blazing twin lead guitar solos to be found, especially on the raging title track, a majestic yet crushing slice of progressive thrash and death metal. "Ice & Fire" pounds from start to finish, as punishing riffs, tasty dual lead harmonies, and acrobatic rhythms provide the framework for Ven's Bay Area styled delivery. Closer "Crimson Dichotomy" takes a more progressive approach with some slight Dream Theater, Rush, and Opeth influences seeming to creep in, but the results are no less astounding, with some of the best riffing you'll hear this year present throughout the song.
This is mighty, mighty stuff here from a band who have a very bright future ahead of them. Make sure you check this one out, and then be on the lookout for part three sometime in the near future.
