Crest of Darkness: Evil Messiah

Evil black metal veterans Crest of Darkness have now been around for 20 years, which really is something to be proud of considering they have basically been toiling in the underground the entire time. Evil Messiah is their latest EP for My Kingdom Music, and contains three new tunes and one cover. This is dark, punishing, evil stuff, complete with plenty of Satanic themes, hellish vocals, relentless drum blasts, and crushing riffs. "Abandoned By God" just never lets up, the raspy screams & growls of bassist Aingar Amlien just rip at your very soul, and the title cut is about as violent and savage as the genre gets. They do an interesting take on the classic Alice Cooper track "Sick Things", making sure to really hone in on the eerie vibe of the original. I'm surprised more black metal acts haven't covered Cooper in the past. Well done.

Probably nothing here you haven't heard before from many other bands, which is probably why this band continues to only dwell in the severe underground, but certainly solid enough for those who can't get enough raw, primal black metal.
