In the year 2000 Ethernity the Belgium metal band was formed and now some fifteen years later they are seeing all those past efforts pay off with the release of their debut. It was the brothers Julien and Nicolas Spreutels who founded the band, Julien is Ethernity's keyboardist and Nicolas their drummer. Back then the progressive power metal group were solely an instrumental group that was until vocalist Julie Coiln joined in 2005.
Having recorded multiple demos since their formation Ethernity must be very satisfied with what they have recorded on their debut. Obscure Illusions is that album and it was mixed and mastered by Simone Mularoni (DGM, Empyrios). Their influences include Adagio, Beyond Twilight, Circus Maximus, Evergrey, Kamelot, Stratovarius, Symphony X, Time Requiem and Yngwie Malmsteen. The one thing I really like about this album is that while sure they have their inspiration from others Ethernity really mix it up delivering an album of compelling metal.
Ethernity set off so impressively by way of the power/progressive track "False Lamenations", and power up they sure do with this persuasive technical melodic number. "Entities" has more robust guitar riffs and a very catchy upbeat chorus, "Shadows On The Wall" explodes to life vigorous drumming and all on this stirring tempo shifter. "Secret Door" is simply a great memorable tune with Julie Coiln's enjoyable vocals being a contributing factor and more of that quality keyboard/guitar work that features on this album. I really can't fault any of the other tracks on Obscure Illusions there is plenty to satisfy even the most demanding power/prog. metal fans. Ethernity saved the longest for last that is the title track "Obscure Illusions" which is quite the praise worthy progressive metal epic, partly reminiscent of Symphony X this is one serious musical treat. Ethernity have it all covered as "Obscure Illusions" also features guest vocalists Tom E. Englund (Evergrey), Kelly Sundown Carpenter (Firewind, Outworld, Beyond Twilight) and Mark Basile (DGM).
Ethernity are one talented metal group and you can hear the proof on their wonderful debut Obscure Illusions.
