Kayleth: Space Muffin

It may not sound like it but Space Muffin is a sludgy slice of stoner with a dusting of doom and sprinkling of space rock liberally wafted on top. It comes from Italian veterans Kayleth, who after ten years and a variety of demo offerings, hit with their debut full lengther. Inspirations aren't hard to find, early Monster Magnet looming large over a mix of Kyuss and Orange Goblin, while a few Hawkwindish leanings via Sabbath interject an occasional change of pace. Vocally Enrico Gastaldo sits neatly and impressively between Dave Wyndorf (Monster Magnet) and Ozzy, his elongated notes and authoritative bark bringing a real sense of urgency and potency to an already strong slam of sludge.

Desert dry riff monsters "Bare Knuckles" and "Secret Place" are where Kayleth sit best, their grounded drone immensely tuneful in an almost unexpected kind of way, as guitars slide and slither, rather than snarl and bite. However through "Spacewalk" (the clue's in the title after all), the Hawkwind ideals swoop and swoon into place, while "Born To Suffer" begins in a similar manner before shape shifting into and then out of one of the most relentless attacks to be found on this album. "NG 2244" also adds a little intrigue, this album closer happy to wend along with the insistence found elsewhere wound in and tamed into a spiralling conglomeration of swerving synths, roaming bass and casually darting guitars. It may be the most obviously restrained offering in sight and yet it is almost the most seductive.

Kayleth may have left their album baking in the oven for a very long time. However this is one Space Muffin which delivers on flavour and presentation. It may lack the distinctiveness to truly stand out in a blind taste test, but you'll happily be found (Orange) "goblin" every last morsel.
