Waverly Lies North: A Soul In The Void

A Soul In The Void is the debut album from French symphonic metaller's Waverly Lies North. The band hails from Abbeville, France and from what I have read the album was first released independently in 2013. With the help of Brennus Music the album has been released again, this time in a professional looking glossy tri-fold digipack.

They formed in 2012 by brothers Ed Mehay (drums) and Julien Mehay (guitars). Rounding out the quintet are Jerome Pecquery (bass) , Eric Pariche (vocals) and Bruno Poidevin (lead guitar). Additional female vocals are provided by Audrey Escots.

Waverly Lies North have made a fine first album with A Soul In The Void. While it won't change the world and the competition is stiff in the genre of symphonic metal there are enough ingredients to make this a very good listen. Huge swells of orchestration and powerful guitar riffs inundate these nine tracks which also reveal some pretty catchy melodies. The album begins with "The Curse" showcasing outstanding choir vocals, symphonic keys and a big guitar crunch. This heavy symphonic approach continues throughout the disc and if I have one complaint it's that by the end of track nine the songs seemed to blend into one another making it difficult to single out individual tracks. That said, the talent is there to make a stellar album so hopefully this French band will continue to refine their craft. As it stands, A Soul In The Void earns a very solid 3.5 stars.
