Abominator: Evil Proclaimed

Proclamations have rhetorical power beyond simple statements. Its one thing to say, for example, "I'm going to eat some cereal" and another thing entirely to proclaim it. Sure, both versions of the statement are trivial, but most people understand that there's at least a rhetorical difference. When we proclaim, there's something at stake, something with potential power. With Evil Proclaimed, Abominator is trying to say something powerful, something that will capture our attention. This band, a long-standing Australian black metal band, has been gone for a while. The band has plenty of fans, but when the spaces between new material grow, people sometimes forget. With this album, the band is proclaiming its return. The title also suggests that there will be no compromising the black metal sound and ethos. Fortunately, the band's comeback comes from Hells Headbangers, a label and distributor committed to some of the most insane and devilish bands out there.

Comeback albums can be risky, but Abominator plays it safe by releasing a strong group of straightforward black metal songs. The music is consistently fast and tight and dark. The lyrics cover precisely the kinds of themes one would expect. I never listened to Abominator in the past, so I can't really compare the new material with the old. However, I can see that this band definitely has black metal roots. This album starts out strong and never lets up. It is also committed to creating fast, intense, and evil music. I especially liked the first few tracks ("Black Mass Warfare," "The Brimstone Nucleus," and "Evil Proclaimed") but have no particular complaint about the album as a whole. It is rather repetitive, especially after the first 4 or 5 tracks. Still, what else could this band have done? This is no time to redefine the sound—this is evil proclaimed. Fans of black metal, especially those who like it fast will find plenty to enjoy here.
