Magnolia: Svart Sagor

Here we have the fifth album from the Swedish hard rock trio known as Magnolia, titled Svart Sagor, out now on Transubstans Records. Don't let the fact that they sing in their native language deter you, as this is some fearsome '70s styled heavy rock filled with massive grooves and scorching guitar work. The band is comprised of Ronny Eriksson (vocals, bass, guitar & keyboards), Nicklas Bergsland (drums), and Jonas Andersson (guitar), and the trio have molded their influences (Cream, Mountain, Cactus, etc) into a formidable unit.

Whether it's pounding out red hot heavy hard rock, as on "Tungt Faller Regnet", "Aldrig Nöjd", and "Omväg", or more bluesy fare such as "Hamnar Aldrig Snett", the results are equally spectacular. Gotta love the scorching wah wah licks of "Tillfällig Frihet", and the doom laden title track brings to mind Black Sabbath's first few albums with its mountainous riffs and menacing tone. Lush acoustic guitars and Eriksson's muscular lead bass lines offer a different flavor on "Bortom Staden Av Guld", and "Kriget Kallar" delivers bluesy hard rock in the vein of vintage Humble Pie or Mountain.

Without a doubt, Svart Sagor contains plenty of swagger, attitude, and muscle. As I said earlier, don't let the fact that the band sings in Swedish stop you from discovering all they have to offer. If you are a fan of any of the bands mentioned above, as well as legendary Swedish act November, this is an album you'll need to hear.
