Jackson, Andy: Signal To Noise

Any fan of Pink Floyd will be familiar with London borne Andy Jackson. He has been involved with Pink Floyd since The Wall, offering his expert sound engineering on Water's first solo album The Pros and Cons Of Hitchhiking and Floyd's The Final Cut, A Momentary Lapse Of Reason, The Division Bell and The Endless River. He also was sound engineer on Pink Floyd's Pulse tour. After working all these years for a band he loved it should come as no surprise his first solo release Signal to Noise has a certain Pink Floyd feel. And that my friends is okay by me as Pink Floyd have always been my favourite band.

Considering this is Jackson's first solo release, the results are really quite stunning. This is an expertly crafted space/prog rock album and Jackson plays everything himself. Very impressive indeed. The music comes off as densely atmospheric and generally slower paced. This is one of those albums to totally immerse yourself in the music, much like a Pink Floyd album in that regard. Spacey keys and textures, emotive lead guitar in the vein of David Gilmour and laid back monotone vocals that perfectly suit the music.

Highlights include the dreamy space rock of "Invisible Colours" where the guitar and effects flow like the cosmic wind and the ten minute long "Herman at the Fountain" with sweeping electronics and sound effects and other worldly guitar leads. I had no idea Jackson is such a wonderful musician.

If you like Pink Floyd, Signal To Noise is a must purchase. A truly rewarding sonic experience that reflects Jackson's love of classic prog yet retains a modern approach that will appeal to fans of all forms of atmospheric/space driven music. Released on Esoteric Antenna.
