Somewhat of a death metal supergroup, Dutch act Apophys credit among their ranks members of God Dethroned, Prostitute Disfigurement, Detonation and Toxocara, and they've put together a solid debut for Metal Blade Records, titled Prime Incursion. Though it's not going to change the face of the genre, the Sci-Fi flavored Prime Incursion is a lot of fun, filled with plenty of juggernaut death metal riffing and bestial growls for any fan of Suffocation, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, and Immolation. "Miscreants" hits quite hard with some manic arrangements and venomous growls, while "Requiem for the Absurd" gallops along with relentless ferocity, drummer Michiel van der Plicht working overtime to deliver some sensational, acrobatic double bass blasting. "Ego" slows things down for a more traditional, Florida death metal sound, and "The Sentient" mixes heavy grooves, old school riffing, and the occasional technical passage for a wild ride. "Humanity's Epilogue" however might be my favorite of the bunch, a rampaging, violent beast loaded with jackhammer blasting, wild tremolo picked riffs, and ungodly growls, all of which recall vintage Morbid Angel.
Some mighty fine death metal to be found here on Prime Incursion. As debuts go, this is a good one, and sets the stage for even better things to come from this outfit.
