Trixter: Human Era

I specifically remember being distinctly underwhelmed by Trixter's return to the fray with New Audio Machine but there must have been enough people who enjoyed it as here they are again. Lead guitarist Steve Brown is certainly bullish about the prospects, "After the success of our last album, New Audio Machine, we felt more confident than ever in making another top notch album. I'm so proud to say that after more than 25 years of making records, Trixter is getting better and better. Human Era will show the world this band at its finest."

He has every right to be as Human Era is full to the brim with anthemic melodic rock winners and gets off to the best possible start with the spectacular opening triumvirate of "Rockin' to the Edge of the Night", "Crash that Party" and "Not Like All the Rest" which lay a solid foundation for the rest of the album. "Not Like All the Rest" in particular feels to this writer like a more "normal" Steel Panther and by that I mean ludicrously hook-laden choruses with loads of 'nah nah nahs' to sing along with and high quality musicianship. In truth, Human Era whilst being released in entirely the wrong decade and at the wrong point in Trixter's career is arguably the finest moment in said career and brilliantly and surprisingly, the best track (the title song) is the final tune and you'll love getting to it.

Trixter: Human Era
Posted by Steven Reid, SoT Staff Writer on 2015-06-30 15:03:02
My Score:

With their 2012 comeback album, New Audio Machine, US arena rockers Trixter shocked many – this reviewer included – with the upbeat vitality to be found on an album which trumped the band's classic era by some distance. Human Era continues down the same path of taking the Def Leppard meets Motley Crue via Night Ranger vibe and adding little Van Halen to the blueprint before delivering it with as much gusto as possible.

Without the shock value (of being surprisingly good) that its predecessor had the advantage of arriving with, Human Era doesn't quite make the same level of instinct impact. Yet live with the slow n' easy "Beats Me Up", partyin' good time of "Every Second Counts" and the very current rock with a touch of country of "Good Times Now" and you'll begin to discover a set of songs keen to stick in your mind. "Midnight In Your Eyes" bounces along with a huge dollop of enthusiasm, while "Soul Of A Lovin' Man" combines one of the album's best guitar moments to stabs of brass in a hard rockin' left turn you don't see coming. However in the "Human Era" track itself Trixter suggest that without the baggage their name carries in 2015, mainstream chart success could actually be achievable, so convincing is this track.

The melodic hard rock landscape is littered with comeback acts, however for most it's a case of living on and not up to past expectations. For Trixter the opposite is true, with first New Audio Machine and now Human Era by far eclipsing what this band accomplished before their lengthy hiatus. Long may it continue.
