Beauvoir Free: American Trash

In certain places Crown of Thorns' debut album is amongst the most revered of albums, probably to the general public, it means practically nothing, however, to some Jean Beauvoir and Micki Free making music together in 2015 is as exciting as it gets. Beauvoir says, "When we write together there really is this magic. We know we want killer guitar riffs and major melodic chorus... and this is what turns out in our songs, in Beauvoir Free style." He concludes, "We both feel this CD is some of the best work we have done, right up their next to the Crown of Thorns debut."

There's no doubt that there is some mighty fine rocking tunes on American Trash and I would strongly suggest that if the album had come out under Lenny Kravitz's name a decade ago it may have sold by the bucketload, yet I can't quite get away from suggesting that this is somewhat of a missed opportunity. The title track, "Whiplash" and possibly "Morning After" (key early tracks)just seem to exist to try and bolster the chaps' rock credentials lacking the necessary hooks or spirit yet when the get it right as on the big ballad "Just Breathe" they get it just right; reflective, heartfelt and just the right amount of guitar wailing. "Shotgun To The Heart", which follows, also has the classic 80's feeling yet still sounds fresh and modern but overall I'm not sure that this album will meet the expectations which it is up against.

Beauvoir Free: American Trash

My Score:

Expectations are funny things. I'm one of those guys Simon refers to above who have cherished the early Crown Of Thorns sound for a few decades now, the strains of "Hike It Up" still enough to get me rather more excited than is truly healthy. So when news that the two creators, Jean Beauvoir (Plasmatics/Little Steven and Kiss songwriter) and Micki Free (Wendy O Williams Band - Paul Stalnley and Gene Simmons collaborator) of that early, high kicking, lip licking sound were coming together in 2015, I couldn't contain a little ripple of excitement.

Now to expect a return to the scintillating form of the self-titled Crown Of Thorns album, some 21 years down the line, wouldn't be realistic, would it? Nah… and truth be told, American Trash never comes close to those sorts of accolades. However it is still a classy melodic hard rock album which leaves no doubt who its protagonists are, Beauvoir still an unmistakable voice and Free still a stylish guitar slinger. Ally those attributes to a collection of glistening hooks and fire-cracking choruses and anyone with a passing interest in what this pair achieved before will find much to enjoy - if little to surprise.

"Shotgun To The Heart" takes you back those two decades, soaring vocals and pounding beat drawing you in immediately through Free's signature guitar sound, "Angels Cry" infused with that upbeat kick of power that made Crown Of Thorns the sugar rush they once were. "Morning After" is a lesson to the many bands who've followed, in how to truly put together a mid-paced lighter waver, without the hackneyed cliches, while "Never Give Up" proves fragility can also lead to strength, as this memorable little number grows large in the memory.

The steam does begin to run out as we near the finish line, an air of padding about "She's A KO" and "Starting Over". However considering just how long they've been away, American Trash still contains an impressive strike rate. It isn't Crown Of Thorns for 2015, but that's not to say that it isn't one of the better melodic hard rock albums this year will throw out, it is and it does trigger some wonderful memories…
