Albanian vocalist Elina Duni has recently released her second album for ECM titled Dallėndyshe (The Swallow). The rest of the quartet includes Colin Vallon (piano), Patrice Moret (double bass) and Norbert Pfammatter (drums).
Duni has an enchanting and beautiful singing voice. According to the press release she 'sings songs of love and exile' and the history of The Balkans is represented in her songs. Given the troubled history in that area of the world it should come as no surprise the music is somber in tone and mood.
Duni combines elements of Albanian folk music and modern jazz and the players are definitely up for the challenge. Each musician knows their role well; the masterful yet subtle drum work, the warm bass notes played with precision and the delicate piano motifs all serve to conjure up a reflective and melancholic sound. At times the music almost takes on a trance-like state and you will wonder where the time went.
This is not an album to listen to get you out of the doldrums but when you prefer a more reflective state of mind, the wistfulness of Dallėndyshe will fill that void quite nicely.
