Lorber, Jeff and Chuck Loeb: Bop
Really, the title says it all. The classic Bop era is alive and well in the form of Bop, the new CD by veteran musicians Jeff Lorber and Chuck Loeb. The disc was put together to help find a cure for PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) which inflicts Lorber and members of his family. It's an excellent way to help raise money for a worthy cause and you get to hear some fantastic music as well.
I can't say enough about the quality musicianship found on this disc. The players include:
Jeff Lorber (Rhodes)
Chuck Loeb (guitar)
Everette Harp (tenor saxophone)
Harvey Mason (drums)
Brian Bromberg (bass)
Rick Braun (trumpet, trombone)
Till Brönner (trumpet)
Special guests include:
Eric Marienthal - alto saxophone (track 6)
John Patitucci – bass (track 9)
Brian Dunne – drums (track 9
Randy Brecker – trumpet (track 9)
What you get with Bop are reworked versions of classic tunes from some of the greats of the bop era like Charlie Parker, Thelonius Monk, Dizzy Gillespie and John Coltrane. The playing is outstanding throughout and the solos are sizzling hot from all involved. No one is left out. Just listen to the incredible bass solo on Gillespie's "A Night in Tunisia" and Parker's "Confirmation" to hear what I mean. Really, you can pick out any of these tunes to hear awesome playing. The Monk classic "Straight No Chaser" is a prime example. Fantastic Rhodes, trumpet and guitar solos are all here for your enjoyment. Of course, this isn't just about soloing. The melodies are just as important as these musicians treat these classics with the care and attention to detail they so richly deserve.
Bop is a fantastic jazz album from a group of exceptional players who have risen to the occasion to help out a friend. Do yourself a favour and get yourself a copy.
