Mark Tremonti's heavy side is presented once again on the latest release bearing his name following that successful debut in 2012 All I Was. If you are familiar with Tremonti's main group Alter Bridge then style wise the second Tremonti album Cauterize is mostly a harder hitting kind of album, as besides the hard rock component Cauterize contains a dose of heavy metal, that is partly of the speed/thrash variety. Which they waste no time hooking in with on the fired up shredder "Radical Change" a great track to open with, and when they decelerate for "Flying Monkeys" and "Another Heart" it's still a ballsy kind of style that is also very catchy. Tremonti is not solely the talented guitarist on Cauterize with those fetching clean vocals he sounds right at home behind the microphone. Fellow band mates include Wolfgang Van Halen who generates those tasty bass lines on "Tie The Noose" and elsewhere, also the drumming on Cauterize is of note. The band gels most effectively with a great chemistry creating such a tight and potent album and the production is so appropriate also.
I never really gave All I Was sufficient time to justly compare the two, though I'm so glad I took the time with this one as Cauterize is a very agreeable Tremonti album. With a nice variety, the songs pass by quite promptly as it's a case of short but sweet, and I have returned many a time for more of that rocking Tremonti style. Cauterize presents a level of heaviness that will surprise those expecting a more radio friendly lighter weight commercial sounding release. And if you want some more well Tremonti will also be releasing another album next year called Dust, as there was not one but actually two albums worth of new material recorded.
