Walton, Jason W.: Mara

The songs on this 7"are connected by a thematic interest in sleep paralysis, a temporary inability to move—in any way—at some point during the sleep cycle. Having experienced it myself, I know how freaky it can be. Walton's interest in sleep paralysis is also personal, but it is also creative. These songs both attempt to channel some of the experience into music. The results are mostly interesting and engaging. As is his wont, Walton developed both tracks by using ambient noise of one sort or another. I love how much variety can be attained with noise and how it can range from soothing to disturbing so quickly and effectively. Of the two tracks, "Alp" was my favorite. It creates a rich and interesting atmosphere. "Yakshi" is more distressing—but I think that's the point. I suggest that interested listeners check out the link to the label website for more information about this release, especially about the kinds of things Walton blended into the mix. He is definitely a creative musician! I'd definitely recommend this to anyone interested in noise music, ambient noise, and even a touch of black metal.
