Agusa: Agusa 2 (Två )

Here we have the second release from Swedish prog/psych act Agusa, simply titled Agusa 2 (Två ). The band now find themselves on the esteemed Lasers Edge label here in the US, which is a perfect place for them to be considering the style of music they play. Comprised of Tobias Petterson (Bass), Mikael Ödesjö (Guitar), Tim Wallander (Drums ), Jonas Berge (Organ), and Jenny Puertas (Flute), Agusa's music is firmly planted in the late '60s/early '70s progressive rock with more than a hint of the initial psychedelic movement. Think early Pink Floyd, some Soft Machine, a little National Health perhaps, and you get a feel for the style of this band, though that's really only scratching the surface. Though there are only two songs on Agusa 2 (Två ), each one is epic length, and allows the band to weave their addicting instrumental skills and take the listener on an exciting ride of proggy goodness. "Ganglat Fran Vintergatan" contains some red hot organ flourishes, sizzling wah-wah guitar solos, and some spacey Pink Floyd-meets-Hawkwind passages, while the lovely flute melodies lead the listener into the majestic "Kung Bores Dans", a tune that brings to mind Camel, Genesis, as well as Anglagard. The brooding atmosphere created by the organ & flute allows the bluesy lead guitar work to interject some stunning emotion, and when Berge unleashes his tasty organ solo, you'll instantly be taken back to 1970 all over again. The semi-thunderous finale allows all the members to rise to the occasion, coming together not unlike the crashing crescendo on the Genesis classic "The Knife" as far as bombastic prog goes.

This is really powerful, majestic, and thought provoking stuff, and you have to give huge amounts of credit to an instrumental band who can take you on a journey and tell a tale without the use of vocals. Well done guys...you have crafted a must hear prog release for any genre fan here in 2015!
