Bruce Forman Trio: The Book Of Forman – Formanism Volume II

Masterclass guitarist Bruce Forman has been making waves in the jazz scene for over three decades and has released several albums as a band leader, his latest being The Book Of Forman – Formanism Volume II.

These guys are superb musicians and they can swing with the best of them. It's a real back to the basics affair as we have Bruce Forman (guitar), Alex Frank (bass) and Marvin Smitty Smith (drums).

From the opening notes of the first track "Hate Mail (Letters of Love)" you just know this will be some swinging good time Bop music in the classic tradition. Forman's guitar work sizzles through tasty fills and sinuous lines over a swinging drum and bass groove. This is the kind of jazz I could listen to all day long. More brilliant licks and grooves can be heard on "The Epic Cure" while Forman's lyrical guitar work in the pretty "On The Street Where You Live" is gentle and melodic, matching perfectly with the subtle and feathery touch of his well-oiled rhythm section. The pace quickens on "PC Jones" beginning with Smith's vibrant drums. In the first two minutes the bass and drums shine as Forman gives them the space they need to weave their magic with some impressive solos.

The disc ends with the slowly meandering "Bittersweet" and as the title suggests a romantic and somewhat nostalgic tone is established as the three musicians finesse their way around the notes with the utmost of ease.

If guitar is your thing you really should give The Book Of Forman the attention it deserves as this is some of the best guitar led jazz I have heard in an awfully long time. Easily recommended.
