Hunter, Steve: Tone Poems Live
World renowned Blues Rock guitarist, Steve Hunter, best known for his '70's work with Alice Cooper and Lou Reed, as well as his work with ex-Genesis vocalist, Peter Gabriel, and his '90's work along side Jason Becker in David Lee Roth's solo band, has released an intriguing CD entitled, Tone Poems Live.
This 11 track live recording (DVD version includes 14 tracks) features the legendary Tony Levin (King Crimson/Peter Gabriel/Black Light Syndrome)on Bass, Phil Aaberg (Elvin Bishop) on Keyboards and Alvino Bennett (Robin Trower/Dave Mason) on Drums. The concept was that the band rehearsed for two days and then filmed and recorded their performance of each song twice, live and then picked the best performance of the two WITHOUT any overdubs being recorded. Quite an interesting effort.
Performances all around are soulful and poignant with Hunter showing that less can be more as he chords his way around excellent renditions of the Gabriel classic, "Solsbury Hill" and a different twist on the SRV staple, "Riviera Paradise". Hunter's phrasing is on point all the while delivered with a creamy guitar tone that just seems to soothe your soul and it is just in between Blues and Jazz.
Tone Poems Live is and impassioned, soulful and inspiring album to delve into. Featuring songs spanning Hunter's career as well as his solo albums, the music comes from the heart and it is easy to feel that this is a labor of love as the emotion on each song is overflowing. This is a great, almost comforting record to listen to as it just attaches to you doesn't let go. Check this record out if you are a fan of great emotive guitar playing executed famously and without ego.
It is of note that Steve Hunter is now legally blind, although touring has not been ruled out completely for him but does obviously present a challenge.
