Bound, Alan J: Deep Space – The Alan J. Bound Retrospective 2005 to 2014

Alan J. Bound is a Cologne based guitarist specializing in space and psychedelic music. His first album Blue Moon was released in 2004, followed by Moonglider in 2006. His last album Cosmology came out in 2010 and rereleased in 2013. His latest album Deep Space, the subject of this review, is a career retrospective consisting of nine tracks, four of which are remixes of older tunes and four taken from the Cosmology album.

As this is the first I have heard Bound's music I was not sure what to expect. This is a pretty good instrumental space rock album with further adventures into electronic and psychedelic sounds.

Also appearing on the album is drummer Jaki Liebezeit, formerly of the German band Can.

Heavier riffs and trippy synths inundate the space music of "Dune" as it does in the equally as trippy "Delightful Changes". In "Elephant" Bound's effects laden guitar and tasty soloing are album highlights as are the liquid like guitar solos in the spacey "Solaris". Another good track is the album opening "N365" with fuzzier guitar and Gilmour-like leads.

The last track "Float" has one of the catchier chord progressions on the disc. Moody synths and soaring guitar leads complete the picture, with Liebezeit providing a rock solid foundation. At over nine minutes in length it does get a little repetitive but is very enjoyable nonetheless.

The liner notes include an interview touching mostly on the Cosmology album.

Deep Space is certainly an enjoyable listen and an album I recommend to all space rock fans without hesitation. It should soon be available on Amazon and CDbaby so don't forget to check it out.
