Dead Letter Circus: Aesthesis
Dead Letter Circus are a new name to me but are apparently megastars in their native Australia and have some pretty well-known names helping them out on this, their third album. Co-produced by Matt Bartlem (Matt Corby, Jarryd James) and mixed by Grammy Award-winning Chris Lord-Alge (Muse, Green Day, U2), the album is described by The End Records as, "complex and ambitious with limit-pushing songs, the band creates a vast sonic universe filled with their trademark sound of intricate-yet-danceable rhythms, ocean-sized guitars, and the lofty voice of Kim Benzie."
I couldn't disagree more. I found the whole thing lifeless and uninteresting. Clearly the band is aiming for a U2/Coldplay kind of stadium rock which also appeals to indie-types as well. What is on offer here is sterile, empty, and bland with pretentions of epicness with one outstanding song (the insistent "While You Wait".) "The Burning Number" has an purposefulness about it but the rest of the album is sadly un-engaging. This is long on atmospherics, but short on inspiration.
