The latest release from UK doom purveyors Witchsorrow once again sees the trio of Necroskull (guitar, vocals), Emily Witch (bass), and Wilbrahammer (drums) paying homage to the greats of the genre, such as Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus, Electric Wizard, Reverend Bizarre, and Trouble. That's right folks, No Light, Only Fire is chock full of slow, massive riffs, plodding drum work, and Necroskull's eerie vocal delivery. I mean, there's some epic stuff happening here, from the crushing, lengthy death march that is "The Martyr", to the pounding riff-o-rama of "Made of the Void" (a song Tony Iommi would be proud of!), the near funeral blast of "Negative Utopia", all the way to the crushing, apocalyptic "Disaster Reality". Along the way, you also get the somewhat blackened punk flavored "To the Gallows" and the delicate acoustic instrumental "Four Candles", but it all leads up to the awesome brontosaurus stomp of the closing, near 15-minute "De Mysteriis Doom Sabbathas", a mind-altering collection of fuzz dripping, monstrous riffs courtesy of Necroskull that are sure to be some of the HEAVIEST stuff you'll hear this year. This one's massive folks, make no mistake about it.
Ultimately, that's pretty much the theme for this entire album...massive. Dark, menacing, and quite thunderous riffs, wah-wah solos, pounding rhythms, and effective vocals that parlay the creepy lyrical themes. Without a doubt, No Light, Only Fire is a must hear doom release for any fan.
