Laitres, Andrew: Singularity

Many of our readers should be familiar with the name Andrew Laitres. He originally formed the progressive rock band Magus in 1985 which later changed names to The Winter Tree in 2010. In 2014, Laitres decided to release the solo album Singularity which is the focus of this review.

All instruments, keyboards and electronics are played by Laitres as this is a true solo effort. Baiba Kranate, a Latvian yoga/spiritual leader did provide a source for inspiration.

The music is ambient/electronic and for the most part very slow paced. Although the soundscapes are quite minimalistic there are some denser moments because of the layering of keyboards and electronics. The last track "Walk With Me" is a slow paced ambient wash of meandering synthesizers and perfect for nighttime listening. My favourite is the much more interesting "All This Could Be Yours" with its Ayreonesque electronics and percussion and varying textural soundscapes. "The Visitors" is also noteworthy as its shimmering keyboards and darker moods are quite intoxicating.

If you are familiar with The Winter Tree you should know that Singularity offers a totally different listening experience. For those into calmer and subdued electronic albums this one may be well worth investigating.
